Happy new year, everybody!
2011 was a phenomenal year for all of us here at Uph. Besides playing some great shows and the incredible success of Water Bears in Space, we also managed to put out four albums. Not bad, not bad.
2012 looks to be just as invigorating and taxing. Here's what's in the works:
Feb. 19 ~ The second annual UphPlugged at Fiume! Come join us for an evening of good folks, good drink and a rare
acoustic set from Uph.
March 6 - 11 ~ Upholstery on tour in the tri-state area, with Charmaine's Names! Stay tuned for details.
Spring is here, bring on the springtime sweats!
Spring is whizzing by and Uph couldn't be happier. Our line-up is in a great stride right now, stretching seams as of yet unstretched. Happy bloomtime to you and yours.
Upholstery's first stab at a music video! ~ Yeah!
Lots of Uph stuff! ~ Gasp!
¡Atención! Our second full-length, Clydesdales & Tardigrades
is now available for your captive ears. Produced by Alison Conard, it features some of the busiest names in Phildelphia's doom jazz, hassidic punk & math rock scenes.
Please nab it at upholstery<dot>bandcamp<dot>com.
Test Kitchen / Mixing
Uph percussionist Corey Mark & myself have been working on new material as a two-piece (!) for the past five months. The exciting new project is a melding of everything that we have done in the past - separately and collectively - with some funky new change-ups. We are now ready to begin recording our first project. An EP of sorts that will serve to document the results of the past five months of composition. Upholstery is on a brief hiatus as Nosila finishes mixing our new album, Clydesdales & Tardigrades (which will be released later this year!).
This new project has proven to be a great outlet for both of us while Upholstery takes a siesta.
The theatrical production, Rails, directed by C. Kennedy and live scored by yours truly premiered earlier this month at the 2009 Philadelphia Fringe. It's through and it was, well, a success! Upholstery wants to thank everyone involved for making it so spectacular. (And a big thanks to everyone that was there to see it all unfold!)
A word from the critics:
As our commenters have beaten me to reporting, many kudos are in order to the creators of this fiendishly satisfying noir comedy/thriller: for its inventive blending of puppetry (including a broom-stick housewife and, best of all, bowler-hatted bowling-pin mafiosos) and live action (notably Kate Black-Regan’s delectably diabolical turn as flame-haired femme fatale-cum-damsel in distress); playwright C. Kennedy’s witty way with genre tropes and comic banter, and smoky, spot-on scoring from local prog-jazz combo Upholstery. Bravo, folks — looking forward to more Stumble Goat productions in the future.
—K. Ross Hoffman, Philadelphia City Paper
The future looks bright for Uph. Our next album, Clydesdales & Tardigrades, is sounding better and better. And rumor has it we will be collaborating with StumbleGoat Productions again soon.
Ahaah. The next Upholstery show is scheduled for Friday, May 1st. This will be our third show at Inciting Hq since our record release party over a year ago. AND we will be playing with Zevious. Zevious (which features Upholstery's bassist, J. DeBlase) is one of our absolute favorite acts to see live. They play punk jazz. Or thrash jazz. Or thrash punk. Not sure. But it's fast. Elegant, raunchy, and fast.
Horses & Aliens
Corey, Alison, and I have started rehearsing material for the next album (my fourth full-length),
Clydesdales & Tardigrades. For whatever reason, it is some of the most mournful material I have ever written. Yet, somehow in a good way. Also, we hope to host the next Upholstery show the first weekend of May.
Stay tuned for hazy details and foggy notions.
